The downside of mass tourism. Some places have had to limit the number of visitors (the Greek island of Santorini for example) because of overcrowding. They have spoilt the very thing they came to see.
It's the same in our area. Much has been geared around tourism - lodgings, hotels, restaurants, tourist shops etc. The shoulder season is long and we all love the winter when it's much quieter. This year, the old part of Saint Malo has limited the accommodation - people have to apply to the Mairie for a permit and it can be refused. They haven't gone far enough, but it's a start. The problem is that people long-let for 10 months of the year but then whop up the prices for July and August. The big mistake has been encouraging people/investors to buy to let and naturally they will go for short holiday lets at exorbitant prices rather than long lets to people who work locally.
