Which brings me to my question. How do people cope with a recorded answerphone message spoken at typical French machine gun rapid fire. I have been trying to book a RDV with my doctor and I get a message with one or two intelligible words. The doctor's name and the word "absent".

Not sure if you are serious or joking. I have, on more than one occasion, called a number a couple of times just to re-listen to the greeting message.

Not joking. I have tried many times over several days. I am almost out of my pain killers. Reading the message more than a dozen times so far it still sounds like one or two long words all squashed together. The doctor's office does not have any email address and they don't even put their opening hours on the door. Once it all gets too much I will try begging the pharmacist to give me a prescription renewal or at least ring the office to translate the message for me. The doc might even have retired for all I know.

AS t sounds as if they are strong painkillers (opiate based) the pharmacy is not normally allowed to prescribe beyond the current prescription.

Logical question. The medication is not available in France. This pharmacy is in Switzerland. So is the doctor treating me. No arnaque, but I understand your concern. These days you have to be more than careful.
