I tried the question "are Ring doorbell cameras legal in france" https://perplexity.ai one of the artificial intelligence (AI) search tools and in summary the answer was:
France's interior minister has stated that only devices taking photos - not moving footage - are allowed if they point beyond a person's property. This means traditional video doorbells that record continuous video of public areas like streets are not permitted.
Photo-only doorbells: Doorbell devices that only take still photographs rather than video recordings can be used legally, as long as they comply with privacy laws
I've not posted more as it was a distillation of articles in ConnexionFrance, The Local and a discussion on another forum. It also mentioned Ring as a source but I couldn't immediately see anything on https://fr-fr.ring.com/ which stated the video doorbells were not allowed in France.

Yes - that was behind my question - given that most front doors open perpendicularly onto the street , making any doorbell camera adjacent to the door likely to film said street.

I have a Jewish friend in Provence wh can't install a camera to spot who is cutting her electricity off at the streetside box (why can't they be electrocuted?), nor can she see who's putting unpleasant stuff in her postbox.

She should set up a cheap wildlife track camera pointing at the cables and back to her front door to catch them, nothing permanent and something cheap.

Or boobytrap the box to catch the swine. (Better warn the postie first though)
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.
