Several places in the Dordogne should be very nice in October. Terrasson-Lavilledieu is lovely and in close proximity to Montignac, Périgueux, Bergerac and even Sarlat which shouldn't be too over crowded with tourists in October. Also very close to Brive-la-Gaillarde which I love and several other lovely villages of the Correze; Collonges-la-Rouge, Turenne, Donzenac, etc.
So many choices.

If you chose Nyons, you could also include Vaison-la-Romaine and the lovely little hilltop town of Brantes.

By my definition of Provence - which does not seem to have a precise definition - no.
But saying that, the immos were advertising la Drome Provencale 20 years ago, so on that basis yes.
