What a load of Rubbish.

We had communal bins dotted about until a couple of years ago when we were issued with individual bins for rubbish and recycling, we have to wheel them down to the road for collection which is once a fortnight. We didn't have much so we generally only put them out once a month, will be different now we have a houseful though. 'tis bloody expensive though.

We have that system here, there’s one advantage which is I can get rid of recyclable things including cardboard (a separate container) when I wish.

We already had a bottle bank within walking distance, but now there’s one on each row of containers. I’m allowed 23 deposits of 1x 60 litre or 2x30 litre sacks per year, above that I have to pay extra. That would be fine except for pup’s poobags and decomposition in summer. I’m fortunate in that I live in the centre of the village and the bins are literally across the square near the mairie.

However, people who cannot walk and carry their bags have to rely on someone else (although I think they are going to introduce options for them).

It’s clear that people drive into the village and leave their bags, often by the side of the bins. I’ve seen as many as a dozen bags left by the bins as well as a rug, mattress and big fuel containers. Some people choose to just dump their bags in order to avoid their card being registered others dump them because the container won’t open or they’ve arrived without their card. At least once a week a separate smaller vehicle comes round to collect all these extra items.

It’s a ridiculous system, especially bearing in mind that only around 2 years earlier they’d issued all of us with 2 new large bins which could be collected and emptied mechanically.

We had a village meeting where the system was explained and we were able to state which we would prefer. Unfortunately the way it was presented suggested that it would be much cheaper for everyone to opt for it and this is what the majority chose.

Will decheteries still accept general waste? That may be a partial way for some.

I wonder how much of this is driven by the company who collects bins to make a bigger profit for less work.

@Bayleaf we don't use the full quota of 18 bags so that's good for us. Yep hide your bin. I was about to get it around 6:30 am as the bin lorry never came that early in the morning when I saw the collection lorry a couple of doors away so couldn't get to it Forgot to add our sacs for the card activated bin are for 60 litres.

Just sizing it up for repurposing! We're averaging about two bags a month now. All food waste goes onto a compost heap, as much (clean/rinsed) recyclable stuff goes in the "bag for life" to get tipped into an existing large bin, next to a bottle bank. Paper/small cardboard is used for firelighting for the woodburners.

This company is made up of former elected officials who saw the €s rolling in and have taken over almost all of the Dordogne rubbish collections and dechetteries.

I have been banging on about it for 2 years now, including the fact all the rubbish bins in the picnic areas have been removed! Tourists are expected to take their rubbish away with them, or they can buy a card to open the bin for 5€, note it only opens the bin once!

Until last year we always had general rubbish bins and recycling bins, with one bottle bin dotted around our village.

Last year those bins were removed and the new bins were installed at our Maire. So far we haven't been issued with cards for the household rubbish bins so can dump as much as we need, for now. I'm sure this will change soon.

As we're on the border with the Lot, in the next village which is in the Lot they still have all the old bins, until that changes, when we have to use cards we will put our household rubbish into their bins

Rubbish tourism!

Across the border France has problems with Swiss rubbish tourism for the same reason.

We're well served here - 2 collections / week, but then Oradour s/Glane is the biggest tourest destination in the region. Our streets are spotless. That doesn't stop the bloody tourists dropping their used masks in the street or walloping guides in le Centre de la Mémoire.
