You certainly don't need to spend 1,000 euros for a decent smart phone.
If you buy a google phone they promise to support it for at least 5 years & are some are now supported for 7 years.

Whilst I agree with you that we are being pushed into using smartphones, they're not all the price of an iPhone. There are plenty of cheaper ones on the market, obviously with more limited capabilities, and reconditioned or secondhand ones.Hotrodder wrote: ↑Fri Nov 24, 2023 4:47 pm This general bullying people into using smartphones for everything is getting tiresome, and it would appear expensive as well. Anyone else noticed how most of the so-called Black Friday deals are for phones? Costing anything up to over a thousand euros a pop, they expect us to dump them as soon as the next model comes on the market, often only 18 months later.![]()
We can't put the clock back (I wouldn't like to go back to using a manual typewriter, washing clothes by hand etc etc) - and anyone who is using this forum surely has internet !!

There are lots of good reconditioned iPhones on Amazon and elsewhere at reasonable prices. You could pick up a new Android smartphone from €200 upwards.

You all seem to have overlooked the "up to" part of my post.
I just don't see any need to spend big bucks on a mobile phone. In fact I wouldn't have one at all if banks and Paypal & a few other entities didn't insist on sending codes by SMS instead of by email.

On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

To get back to the Forex situation, I have used Wise for many years, I find them good on the exchange rates and the speed of the transfer from my UK bank to CA takes seconds to effect. I did try and register on another one but they wanted to know the ins and outs of a DA, so stuck with Wise.

I wonder if you're having the same trouble that I had with Wise, Mad? I had used them in the past for simple, one-off currency transfers but on the last occasion, they seemed to be directing me to opening an actual money-holding account with them. That's not what I wanted! I managed to cancel that account and wriggle my way around their site until I was able to do a single transaction. Worth seeing if they'll allow you to do that rather than going through all the hoops to establish an account?

And will it become necessary to list Wise on your annual tax forms? Probably.

Ok, I did persevere with Wise and I am now identified. Between the tremor and v. deaf husband ignoring my commands to movre the cam back, it was a bit of a palava but we got there.
My next question is how to transfer GBP to EUR inn one go via Wise, i.e., transfer part of my UK accouunt balance to my a/ at CA in euros. I've looked on Wise and it doesn't seem to explain sufficiently simply for my pe-brain (what's left of it). It'll be tomorrow before I get to it as the process has worn me out.

MAD, I think you sell them sterling, which in effect stays in the UK, and they sell you Euros which are already over here somewhere. Thus, when you do a transfer through Wise, they have authority to take it from your UK A/C, and within minutes (sometimes seconds!), you get an email saying it's done, and an email from your French Bank saying it has credited your account.
Very efficient! Worst part is watching the rate and trying to time it for a few extra euros! Wise will give you daily rate updates if you request it.

Log onto Wise - and set up the transfer to EUR.
Tell them you will send money from your UK Bank
They will give you a UK Bank Account plus a unique reference
Go onto your UK Bank and send the money using the details they have provided
When the money arrives at Wise they will send the EUR.
PM me if you want more info - if you can see my screen I can show you more.
