Here the fete du chasseur is a meal which goes on for hours, barbequed deer and sanglier, mucheo vin consumed with it.
I posted a while ago that this year as last is cancelled so all meats kept in freezers were distributed around. We got a hind quarter of venison as last year so thats our christmas/new years meals, apart from the marinadation and cooking.
We also have two, as the chasseurs fell out years ago, now run by two brothers ( neighbors of ours) one a retired builder the other a retired farmer they live opposite to each other just up the road.
The retired farmers fete we dont go to now as its always so late, instead of starting at 8pm it is about 9.30 to 10 pm and goes on for hours, the last which we went to we left at 1am and heard many cars going home at 4am.

I don't think it's allowed to shoot anything from a vehicle, or indeed from the roadside. Not that that has ever stopped any chasseurs from having a go!

Shooting from the roadside is permitted. Shooting towards a road within a certain distance (250m??) is not. The nature of our terrain is that hunters will often line a road but always shooting away from it.

Incidentally our chasse seems very well behaved but then one false step due to imbibing alcohol would likely leave the drinker several tens of metres away and probably on their way to hospital. Perhaps Darwinian selection has already weeded out the weak.

I can't help wondering how these gun happy morons would get on if the animals were carrying guns like the Germans did all those years ago.

A French friend and I were riding on a signed chemin through the woods one day when suddenly bullets whistled past us. Immediately my friend shouted to stop firing as there were people and horses on the track. We could see no-one in the depths of the woods, but assume that meant he couldn't see us either. Maybe he was simply shooting towards the sound we made riding by. The shooting stopped, but we never did see who it was firing towards us. Very, very scary.

Back in the 60s I was in the garden with my two young daughters when they started hunting/shooting in the fields at the back.
Suddenly shots reigned down on the bungalow roof and garden shed,
I jumped over the fence ran over to the stupid gunman and told him that i'd grab his gun and hit him over his head with it for being so stupid shooting towards houses and a road.
Left him looking very dejected, perhaps he learnt a lesson.

I know it was not intended but as someone who lives very close to an area where a lot of French and English "gun happy morons" did indeed face up to the Germans and in the main lost very badly, I find the comment somewhat offensive.

Spend a few minutes looking at the resistance on the Vercors plateau, La Chapelle en Vercors, Grotte de la luire and Vassieux en Vercors museum to the resistance.

We are very lucky here, although I hear the guns in the distance, they do not threaten us as we live on a virtual island. This is because the 'main lane' runs in a wide arc behind us and our minor one goes straight up the hill to rejoin it. There are 3 residences, including ours, in our corner and then another way over beyond the forest is in the farthest part of the 'D'. I forget the rules regarding how close to a habitation they are forbidden to shoot, but whatever it is it is not worth their while to cross in to the D, wild though it is and full of game passing through. It helps of course that one neighbour is, or was, in the chasse so it may be that he kept them in check.
So Jules and I have 2 large fields to wander in and one largish forest, plenty enough for his snaking route following the scents.
Years ago we used to go the annual Chasse meal in the evening which was a very convivial get together, with many courses including deer and boar spread out over hours, but coming home at 2 in the morning was less and less attractive.

I had no intention to offend anyone apart from the irresponsible hunters that delight in breaking the rules and endangering the general public. I think most of us have lost family members in the war myself included.
