According to today's newspaper reports the suspected killer, the 17 year old girl, is under 'garde à vue' but nothing has been said about her hunting 'supervisor'

BTW, here at our end of the Lot there are no warning signs ever about where they are hunting, except out of season for 'battues administratrives'.

Might be worth writing to the Président Départementale de la Chasse for the Lot, then? The Prés at national level has called for tightened security but it wouldn't hurt to make the individual responsables aware of local problems.

According to my OH, a high powered rifle bullet can travel more than 2k in distance so having good or bad eyesight has little to do with it. There have been examples of bullets passing through houses and cars on motorways as well as others sadly wounding or killing people going about their daily lives.
A single ball shotgun cartridge will kill a boar over a fairly short distance.
My neighbours husband,sadly no longer with us, was a hunter all his life but stopped when high powered rifles started to be used. He said they were far too dangerous and he was right.

Here for the first time in 15 years we have twice ( ) seen hunting signs up the lane. Sangliers being hunted. The signs are brand new and they have obviously just been made this season due to pressure so none available prior to that as nobody bothered! The problem is when hunting with dogs the hunt can move on rapidly and be several fields away in no time, we witnessed this one day when the hunt was close to our hamlet (no signs up) and we drove to another hamlet about 1k away for a walk and a wild boar rocketed across in front of us (it escaped into private land, hunt stopped) followed by the hounds. So even with signs the hunt could suddenly turn up in a different place altogether.

A British woman invited as a guest to a wild boar hunt was killed by her companion in France on Sunday, a judicial source said.

The 67-year-old was wounded 'above the heart' and taken to hospital in Saint-Brieuc, Brittany, where she died around midday, public prosecutor Nicolas Heitz said.

The companion who shot her, a 69-year-old man, carried out a 'shot with his rifle which he was carrying at the shoulder,' directed towards her back, according to a judicial press release.

Considering that the DM reports that the hunting season is drawing to a close, when in fact it runs from September to March, it doesn't do much for their credibility?

As one that has used a shotgun for many years and been a member of a shooting club, in the UK and killed a fair bit of vermin/game the golden rule is never point a gun at anything unless you are going to fire it, also you are taught to check your field of fire, again this can alter according to the load of the cartridge. Its education, education and more education thats needed and a total 100% ban on alcohol and nowadays drugs, all shooters should have compulsory insurance. In the UK you start with a shotgun licence, anything else needs a firearms certificate. We have a few hunts around here we always stay indoors when they are about. Dont forget that someone has to control Deers and other animals otherwise a lot of fauna and flora and smaller wildlife will suffer.

Yes, it is that time of year again.... already. How time flies.

I have adjusted my daily walks to try to stay alive...

Just yesterday, I was walking along a relatively remote road and the only vehicle that passed me was a white pick-up truck with the infamous dog crate with hunting dog in it. Gave me a bit of a shiver.

As I read it, it was a rifle not a shotgun - and a sanglier hunt. And yes, the DM photo editors are inept as well.

But certainly one up the spout and no safety catch is not a good way to carry a gun.
