Apparently les Pompiers professionnels are on strike today .... let's hope the arsonists ruddy well don't take it as an opportunity. I think after the "season" we've had, the Government really need to show their appreciation...

French "wild' fires
When we were in Bordeaux, we heard lots of complaints from the pompiers professionnels that they were being under-used : that it was pompiers volontaires who were being sent to fight the fires not the pros.
A recruitment drive has seen an increase in applications for pompiers volontaires in the Gironde area.
It's been felt for a long time that there has been a reluctance by the government to give money to the emergency services - we've already seen that with hospitals, brought home by the appalling lack of means, beds and material when Covid first reared it's head.
If this summer is going to become the norm and fires become more frequent and more dangerous, then fire fighters must have the wherewithal to do their job. The health of firefighters is also greatly at risk despite certain precautions. How they work in these temperatures, quite apart from the temperatures of the fires, with the heavy clothes/gear they carry ...... masks are incredibly uncomfortable ..... Perhaps some of the powers that be need to experience first hand something of what these people have to put up <ith to do their job .....
