What a load of Rubbish.

Well, well. Good news and bad news! Just been out to get some work done, and lo and behold, there are three sparkly new "bins" at the end of our road. It's a big, open area, part of an old quarry, which sometimes gets used to dump earth and rock. Nice and convenient for us, but very tempting to become a fly tip as people will see the big rocks (to deter people driving further into the old quarry site) have been pushed aside for dumping earth etc.

We'll all be keeping a close eye on that - as already where other new bins have been put, the area around has been sealed off because of fly-tipping.

Are these the ones dug into the ground with a huge sort of net to hold the waste or entirely on the surface?

All above ground - so not that big, and will need emptying every week. As below, but no brown one for cardboard.

It seems different departments do different things. Our little hamlet has a general waste collection once a week from our wheelie bins and cardboard/tins once every 2 weeks. We take our bottles to the dechetterie. Like Bayleaf, all food waste goes in the compost bin so we generally only have a small bag of general rubbish. We use all paper to light the wood burner.

That has all the temptation for someone to save a few euros and stick stuff in the wrong bin - so let us hope they do not introduce charges and the change is simply for economy of scale.

That has been done, in fact I queried a Dutch tourist I saw putting black bin rubbish into the recycling bin. He told me as a visitor he was not prepared to pay 5€ to throw his rubbish away, so he thought putting it in a bin (just like the ones in the photo above) was better than just leaving it on floor.

We're still waiting for the "Card", so I guess the paying part won't be implemented yet - indeed, what will holidaymakers do?

18 bags a year - that's one and a half per month.

Our wheelie bin came from the UK and isn't a standard French one - but thanks for the head's up, Sparkle - will hide it forthwith!!

We have just gone back to wheelie bins after taking the bags to centralised bins for years.

Rubbish tourism!

Across the border France has problems with Swiss rubbish tourism for the same reason.

My daughter was here last weekend and we were laughing about how small her rubbish collection bag had been when she lived in Zug.

In StY they have small wheelie bins with a bar code - and a reader on the lorry. Not sure how many bins are free in a year before costs kick in - or if it is weighing the bin each time.

If the latter the next thing will be having to lock the bins to prevent someone from using your allowance.

We have 2 collections per week - 4am-ish Monday and the same on Thursday - All rubbish is permitted providing it is in black plastic bags, thousands of which are distributed free of charge throughout the year.
