A battue is exactly that, Char...a closely controlled cull, whether foxes, deer or sanglier. They're the exception to the limited season hunting and can be done throughout the year on application to the Préfecture for permission. Certainly, round here, they're properly conducted, very visibly signed and there's never been a hint of drunkenness or irresponsible behaviour.
As far as hunting deer goes, not many folks seem to realise what's involved if a hunter wants one of those! They have to apply to the official chasse for a tag (very expensive) to prove that the animal has been hunted and not poached. The penalties for being caught with an untagged animal are immense. That's why, when a deer (or sanglier) is injured or killed by a vehicule, it disappears within minutes

Can you imagine what the accident rate is, and what the roads will look like if and when the younger generations aren't interested any more?
