They're too busy earning a living for the most part.
In the "old" days", living costs were reasonable. OK, folk worked longer hours and pensions were smaller, but a lot of women didn't work or had little jobs for pin money.
Yes, there was a lot more respect. That's gone. When I was last in the UK (2018), I took the so-called express shuttle from Stansted to Victoria. The car riage was packed, and full of young people. I stood all the way to London, giving the Evil Eye to each of the young oiks in turn, but not one offered me their seat.

I was offered a seat by a young woman on the London underground earlier this month. My immediate thought was, do I really look that old?
I thanked her for her gesture. 🙂
