When you go abroad your network is unavailable but roaming allows your phone to pick up any available. An oddity is that smaller providers like Free don’t offer a nationwide network of their own but if the Free network is unavailable my Free SIM card roams in France and uses the orange network. If your phone is linked to a network and you have a data package you can use it in your own country or roaming.
Does your Free phone actually show an 'R' roaming indicator when it is connected to another French provider? Free have a roaming contract with Orange that expires in 2022. Free's coverage is now quite extensive and in 50 is the only operator in some locations.

In the UK not all providers have country wide coverage so phones sometimes use a provider other than that of the sim installed but do not show the roaming R when doing so.
My phone shows an R when it is using the Orange network.

Thank you.

The latest coverage information https://tinyurl.com/5c7662nr

"As of January 1, 2021, the 4G coverage of the population in mainland France announced by the operators was 99% of the population at Orange, Bouygues Telecom, and SFR and 98% of the population at Free mobile. The area coverage - and therefore the territory - was lower with respectively 92% for Orange 4G, 91% for Bouygues, 93% for SFR and finally 89% for Free "

Free is doing better than you think?

Thanks for that link.

Not one single dot in the entire commune. Surrounding one have a few connections to single suppliers - we are in that 8% or so of area not covered.
