the latest problem around here are the landslides. roadside banks are cracking away and walls are tumbling into the road. waterlogged ground is slippery stuff.

It has poured down all afternoon. Unlike many of you it has been relatively dry this winter but with the melting snow and heavy rain on top, our cellar spring has started to run (well more accurately weep). This will I think be only the seventh time in the 21 years we have owned the property.

It has been quite a while since the serious winds that were toppling trees and blocking roads but trees are still falling now because there have been very few days without rain since Xmas and the ground is just too soft and gooey for the trees to get a grip.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

This winter has been pretty wet but not cold - I think we've only had a couple of days below freezing. We have had a lot of wind though. The wind chill factor makes a difference to what would otherwise have been fairly mild temperatures and we've had to pull some large shrubs upright again : the ground has been softened by the rain so they haven't been firm enough to withstand the wind. There's been no problem with flooding in this area so we've certainly been more fortunate than many.

And then last night, the deluge turned to snow. It is now melting but I am beginning to wonder what the meteorologists were taking when they decided that 1st March is the first day of spring.

It's always been called the start of the spring equinox till now.
As for snow, there's plenty of time for a lot more.
I remember the 20th anniversary of my first marriage back in UK
22nd of April 1981 and we had arranged a party, we had over 6" of snow in the afternoon but a few braved the weather.

On my son William’s first birthday on 31st July 1994 we were camping in Samöens in the Savoie. We ate his birthday tea in the caravan awning looking out at the fresh snow on the hills all around us. The snow showers had already cut short our cycle ride earlier in the day.
