Weather ... again
Stunning photo, Blaze. Her eit is still and foggy. Only 11C & I wished I'd had my gloves when I went out this morning.

Good Lord, that's crazy Blaze. I can't imagine living with that kind of threat.
We had tons of rain last night. We also had a period of heavy rainfall the previous night. Wheelbarrow is full of water.
Yesterday was an Orange alert for rain/flooding. Today is yellow.

The risk round here is submersion by the sea rather than flooding from rivers or heavy rainfall. Many parts of the coast of France are suffering erosion with prooperties under threat - much like parts of the east coast of England.
The tempête Xinthia in 2010 combined with spring tides caused huge damage on the west coast of France and at La Faute sur Mer (Vendée), houses built on unsuitable land were flooded by the sea, causing the deaths of 29 people. The government reacted by making it obligatory to take certain precautions in designated "red zones" (bungalows to have an escape route via the roof, a ring in the wall to tie a boat, etc). Where we are in the Baie of Mont Saint-Michel, we're probably less at risk than Saint-Malo (as you can see from the photo). The Baie is very silted up partly due to the mussel and oyster farms in the area. The tide comes in quite fast at a steady pace (not quite a galloping horse here !) but even in a tempête, we don't get the huge waves you see elsewhere along the coast.

Here is an example of a grand marée at Saint-Malo (made by the same chap that took the photo). Not every spring tide is as dramatic, but I wouldn't like to own a house on the Sillon .... owners have to be rich enough to afford one heck of a lot of maintenance ....

That is absolutely crazy. I note the sea wall seems to be leaning back and (as a non-hydraulic mechanics expert) I would have thought that funnels the waves up onto the esplanade.
I note that in Dawlish (where the railway runs along the top of the sea wall and where severe storms swept away parts of the wall and left the lines dangling in mid air) the replacement sea wall is similarly shaped except that at the top it bows out again, so deflecting any water reaching the top of the wall back out to sea.

I remember seeing photos of that. I used to use the line fairly often at one point and going round that bit of the coast was always a high point in the journey ...
Saint-Malo is protected on the seaward side by "brise-lames", huge oak piles driven into the ground. The old ones have just been replaced - they were about 200 years old.

Amazing photos!
Arrived back home in the UK from the Gard last night, woke to fog this morning but the sun broke through and stayed, so we have a lovely day, 18C. The forecast shows sunshine and cloud, but the sky is beautifully clear.
It’s a similar temperature to our town in the Gard, but it’s cloudy there.
