Not tropical, 2.3 C. We keep our fingers crossed for this weekend, why? Meanwhile, over at our eastern neighbours, cold as ice and a record this morning in the village Marienberg-Kühnhaide ( Winter Wonderland in Sachsen): minus 27.8 C. Elsewhere in Germany: chaos on the roads.

Weather update: extreme weather conditions in Germany, storm Elli: VW halts production on Friday in Emden and brings forward a planned day off. Snow cripples air, road and train traffic. The ICE trains (Intercity-Express) of the "Deutschen Bahn" should be fast in winter conditions, not this afternoon. These guys keep rolling.Pedestrians walk slowly.... Or no fuel consumption at all: walking also difficult.

No train today, my love has gone away...Crossings by ferry to the Dutch Wadden island "Ameland" also not possible today, not a problem for old internet pictures (2010)

Photographer's delight in Clamecy (Nièvre): not sailing today. To Paris where the quays of the Seine river are covered in white, much to the delight of walkers.

Update Friday morning: no trains around Hannover. Again time for the photographers to go picture hunting, here in the Northwest, Friesland. More snow is on its way. In Normandy the same: Afin de garantir la sécurité des voyageurs et du personnel, @SNCFReseau a décidé de suspendre progressivement les circulations ferroviaires.

This morning in Amsterdam: + 2 C and grey, grey, drizzle and more grey. Different story yesterday in a village called Markelo (7,000 inhabitants), hosting the second edition of the Grand Prix gallop skiing, the first one was sixteen years ago. No international names in the field of participants yet and not a preliminary qualifying round for the Winter Olympics. People stood behind a fence, watching attentively what was happening on a snow-covered field in the centre of the village. Anyone who wanted to catch a glimpse of a skier or snowboarder gliding behind a fast galloping horse had to squeeze through the crowd. The forty participants had to complete two 350-metre laps as quickly as possible, slaloming between orange cones, hay bales and snowmen.
