We had rain in the night, bot a huge amount but it was lovely to wake up to cooler, damp conditions and smell the petrichor.
It hasn’t made any difference to the straw that used to be lawns but I expect the weeds will grow even more.
After various health problems and several heatwaves I enjoyed being out in the garden cutting back many brambles before sitting out enjoying the garden despite so many shrubs suffering from the drought.
Two very large and one smaller Cornus alba 'Elegantissima' bushes are suffering badly - I’m hoping that as they’ve made it through heatwaves in previous years that they’ll survive this one - I planted one of them about 40 years ago and another is only a year or two younger.
A couple of Acer palmatum atropurpureums are also suffering like the Elegantissimas, the leaves of both both are turning brown and crinkly though the green acers are dealing better with the heat which I’m glad about - one of those I also planted about 40 years ago.
I also noticed today that a clematis montana that grows through the large apple tree has died.

It's raining! It wasn't forecast, but this is lovely, slow, steady rain that'll certainly cheer up some flagging plants.

I haven't dared look at my acers! The one outside the mairie looks fine, but I suppose tyhey've been watering it.
