@Blaze you are a gem.
With this hand, I will lift your sorrows. Your cup will never be empty, for I will be your wine. With this candle, I will light your way into darkness. With this ring, I ask you to be mine.........The Corpse Bride

Thanks for the good wishes folks 😊
We arrived late lunchtime. The wind has changed so the air isn't really Smokey. Hard to believe what's happening on le a few miles ko away. Accommodation for about 40 of us is in a hangar on camp beds. Tried to post a photo from my phone but it's upside down 🤣

Yes, thank you for the update.

Not likely much sleep to be had in those circumstances.

You are all very brave and we are all grateful for the work you do. Stay safe out there.

Please keep us posted when / if you can.

@RA. We always have maps with us, we wouldn't be without them!
Interesting point about the possibility of lines/comms going down. It could be pretty catastrophic. No one's talked about that here !

@lori We are unlikely to be in any dangerous situations but evacuating oldies from EHPADs could be challenging. It actually depends how far we have to go. No one wants heros or risk takers. So far no civvy lives lost, the evacuations have been really well organised.

Cell towers destroyed or without leccy after their battery backup has been used to the last electron, standard alternatives:

* Satellite phones and messengers (Garmin inReach).

* Walkie-talkies and FRS/GMRS radios, short range.

* CB radios: local vehicle and home group communication.

* Amateur (Ham) radios, long-range voice communication. Problem: where to find these guys and improvise a communication network. Beam me back in time, Scotty.

Lessons from the past, during the devastating North Sea flood of February 1, 1953, amateur radio operators established a vital emergency communication network when standard telephone and telegraph lines across the Dutch province Zeeland failed. Key figures like radiotechnician Peter Hossfeld built makeshift emergency transmitters ("flessenzenders") to relay urgent rescue requests from isolated areas like Zierikzee to the outside world. He used spare parts from a local radio shop in Zierikzee - including a glass bottle for a coil form - to construct a working transmitter. Memorial events frequently utilize frequencies around 3700–3705 kHz to honor the original emergency net.

Good luck Blaze, hats off to you and stay safe.

Why don't they use the farmers watering systems to aid the hoses?
