Hardly surprising, but time to get super economic with mains water usage. Even our source of spring water has greatly reduced, but never let us down completely - fingers' crossed it doesn't this year.

Quatre niveaux d’alerte sont établis par Propluvia et représentés par des couleurs sur leur carte interactive :

- Le niveau vigilance (en gris), où il est demandé aux particuliers et aux professionnels de faire des économies d’eau.

- Le niveau alerte (en jaune), où il est question de : « réduction des prélèvements à des fins agricoles inférieure à 50 % (ou interdiction jusqu’à 3 jours par semaine), mesures d’interdiction de manœuvre de vanne, d’activité nautique, interdiction à certaines heures d’arroser les jardins, espaces verts, golfs, de laver sa voiture ».

- Le niveau alerte renforcé (en orange), où il doit y avoir : « réduction des prélèvements à des fins agricoles supérieure ou égale à 50 % (ou interdiction supérieure ou égale à 3,5 jours par semaine), limitation plus forte des prélèvements pour l’arrosage des jardins, espaces verts, golfs, lavage des voitures, jusqu’à l’interdiction de certains prélèvements »

- Le niveau crise (en rouge), avec un « arrêt des prélèvements non prioritaires y compris des prélèvements à des fins agricoles. Seuls les prélèvements permettant d’assurer l’exercice des usages prioritaires sont autorisés (santé, Sécurité civile, eau potable, salubrité). »

We're hosepipe-restricted to before 8 a.m. and after 8 p.m., which is when I've been doing it + water butt.

Our Dept, 24 I can't work out if we're restricted as there are little blobs of yellow, red and orange but a lot is white

Bayleaf's map is already out of date (inevitable I would guess) and we have moved from yellow to orange in our bit of the departement.

Is this just for farmers who pull water from rivers? Or everyone who waters their plants?

What are the rules for those with wells or springs - or who use butts - and do not draw water from the rivers or mains for watering plants etc?

We've been at level Orange (heavy restrictions) since April. No end in sight to the heat.

I am not sure if this is departement specific but I would guess that even then they would be quite similar.

Thanks - so water butts are OK - no mention of springs and wells - so I presume they are treated as an uncaptured source just like a river is.

You'll get the answer from Google "réstictions d'eau" followed or preceded by your postcode.
Any restrictions are set out according to situation (potager, exploitation agricole, etc.)

Saint-Malo has just announced that it would stop watering its flowerbeds, jardinières and hanging baskets to try to save water. The flowers are something we have always admired here, and will be sad to see them die off even if morally it's the right thing to do.
I suppose they have to set an example ....
