I don't know if this is the right section, but here goes. I'm thinking of getting someone via Helpx to help me with jobs in the garden. Has anyone used Helpx, what was your experience, and is there anything I should be aware of. I'm on my own now and I would be nervous having a stranger in the house but on the other hand it would be nice to have company.

Have heard of Workaway but know nobody personally who has used it.
My (older) friends who live alone use chèque emploi to pay for help in the garden or the house.
Examples of explanation ..

@Mangetout The only one I've heard of is WOOFS which sounds similar to Workaway.
@suein56 We got someone in to help in the garden to do some of the heavier stuff we weren't up to and we paid him with chèque emploi. It was brilliant and we all did well out of it.

Mangetout - I just posted this on the 'other' forum.
I haven't actually used them but a close friend has. She has horses and is engaged in equine research, so she has always gone for someone familiar with horses and their care - often a vet student. In all the years she has been having workaways I think she has only had one or two with whom she wasn't impressed. She always makes sure that she achieves a balance between finding them useful things to do to help around the place with the horses, and taking them out and about a bit to places of interest. The last person was a lovely indefatigable Polish vet student who even wanted to do the cooking. Another person I know seems to want the work to be done but doesn't plan much in the way of interesting things to do, so I think she gets less from the arrangement.

My friend who used to manage a campsite, had a very nice young man who did work around the grounds in exchange for living as part of their family.
He was something like an adult in foster/special care so regular checks were done with the family. They actually received a small payment for doing this.
He was a nice man and loved dogs so used to take ours for walks because he wanted to.
I'll try to find out who the organisation was that had this scheme.
