I thought I’d start a thread on tips on speaking French. The idea is a list of rules of thumb that help. Only one tip per reply and here are two to get started

Connaître vs savoir
Having problems when to use ?
Tip: connaître is followed by a noun

Tip: words in French that end in “tion” are feminine and are usually the same meaning as their English equivalent (but not always)
There are about 150 equivalents

Words ending "...age" are masculine except :
La plage, image, nage, page, rage, cage, saxifrage (and possibly some other plants !)

Words ending in -ment are masculine (can't think of any exceptions).

We have gender-neutral words on the other side of the Rostigarben.
