Northern Lights

#1 Post by exile »

A strong anomaly has been reported meaning that the Northern Lights should be visible over much of Northern Europe.

Tonight doing my rounds, I noted light white streaks to the sky in the north. I wondered if it could just be the NL and went to search out the camera, which is unfortunately one of those does everything for you types. By the time I had figured out all of the over-rides the steaks had disappeared but I did get a never going to win any prizes shot showing (on digital imagery) a red glow on the northern horizon.

The thing that makes this perhaps interesting is that I have never heard of the lights being seen this far south - literally a couple of kms off the 45th parallel.

Due to last into tomorrow so maybe you could get a chance to see them too. Rather strange but unimpressive to the naked eye but worth a camera shot where you get the colours.

We saw the red glow at bout 10.30 last night. We are in southern Lot et Garonne.

My sister lives at the north end of the Isle of Lewis and the photos she took are amazing, even with a not-very-good camera. She said that looking north there was very little, but that all the activity was west and east and overhead. The colours seemed more the red end of the spectrum than the green end.
I completely forgot to look (too knackered

These were taken by a friend who lives about half an hour south of Saint Malo. She took them around midnight. I'm kicking myself having forgotten !
Perhaps this evening again ??

Ooh, glad someone put this subject up - my son was going on about the Solar Flare that was causing this phenomena yesterday. I did see a glow in the North around 11pm, that I'm assured was the NL, but I said "Are you sure it's not just the glow from Limoges?"!

It's possible that this geomagnetic storm can apparently "impact infrastructure, including satellites and the power grid, the NOAA warned."
So be prepared for your GPS to go rogue! :D

Looking forward to maybe catching a glimpse tonight, if it stays clear ....

On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

I’m a bit spoilt when it comes to the Northern Lights. Having spent two years working in Hammerfest (70°N), these were a very regular occurrence. The most unusual I saw ( and I had to stop the car and get out to marvel at it) was a bright silver colour.

Lovely colours in your friend’s photos, Blaze.

Maybe there’s a chance tonight……….

I understand the next show like this will be in 22 years’ time, or 11 years, depending on who the ‘expert’ is that you’re listening to, but not guaranteed to be as wonderful.

It is quite possible that we will get a show again tonight but likely to be less strong than last night and may well not extend as far south.

My comparatively amateurish shot
