1€ SNCF Train tickets

#1 Post by Bayleaf »

I actually had occasion to use this great value service at the weekend. I was due to travel by train from Toulouse to Brive, so booked the ticket the previous Sunday. Date of travel was 1st June, and it gave me two options for the time of day I wanted. 34€ normally, but because it was the 1st weekend of the month, I could buy a 1€ ticket. Suspecting a scam, I asked my daughter to check - being a seasoned train traveller. Nope, all good. Bought online, printed out a ticket, job done.

I suspected all week that it was too good to be true, so while waiting to embark on Saturday afternoon, we checked the journey of said train, as I was paranoid I wouldn't get off at the right station (I haven't been on a train since school days, 40 odd years ago!). Turns out it was a shuttle train, with only four carriages, and would be only going from Toulouse to Brive la Gaillarde (phew!), stopping at each station en route. That didn't bother me - more sight seeing opportunity. Just took slightly longer. People hopped on and off along the way, no ticket checks.

So, a heads up! If you want to travel cheap - make it the first weekend of the month! My bargain of the year!! :D Oh, and just shows how long since I've been on a train - they have charging points for 'phones and suchlike - how cool is that?!! I'm so behind the times!

Was an "app" required at some point?
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

Nope. Just looked up the SNCF site on my laptop. The only snag I hit was when the confirmation email came through where I thought I could print out the ticket didn't work. But by then you've sort of created an account on the site (with minimal info.) where you can view confirmation of ticket and print out from there.

You can do it by app apparently and just have the ticket on your 'phone - but that's far too techie for me!

I used the app last year- I found it pretty straightforward to use even for an old dinosaur .....
