Transporters ??

#1 Post by Char »

My Husband asked me to post the following question.
Hi. I have the opportunity to buy an engine for an old bike that I'm restoring, at a low price. The problem that I have is that the motor is in the Buches du Rhone and we're in La Creuse. I can't collect it, so I need a transporter. The motor weighs about 50 kilo. I've had a quick look and it appears that it'll need to be strapped to a pallet if I want one of the major carriers to collect it. I don't think that I can rely on much help from the seller.
My question is, whether anyone knows of a smaller transporter that might be more flexible and charge less than 100€.
Any suggestions will be appreciated and gratefully received.

Unfortunately a return trip for the transporter will always cost more, particularly if the return trip is empty (unless you are lucky enough to be a part load).
Do you have a bike dealer in the area who could recommend someone ? Any other bike enthusiasts in the area ?

50kg weight essentially means it must be transported so that it can be loaded and unloaded without the need for unassisted manual lifting - European safety regulation*. So a pallet is likely to be the only way.

* The days when millers, coal merchants etc would handle one hundredweight sack (50Kg) have long gone - along with the hernias and back issues.

Sorry and to add: The pallet means you will need a transporter with a tail lift and a pallet truck, so a man with a van is probably out of the question - sorry.

You might try GLS, though they cause me endless grief by delivering to the pointe relais and not to our house.

Why not just drive down?

A 50kg bike engine will go in the boot of a car and be strapped down. Surely the seller can arrange some help lifting it?

The OP probably has a very good reason for saying he can't collect it. Why on earth should it matter ?

That's what transporters are there for - to deliver goods that the purchaser cannot collect.

It might be 20000l petrol from a refinery. Customer does not have a tanker to collect.
It might be a book from the Amazon warehouse. Customer cannot be @r5ed to travel the length of France for just one book or indeed probably a whole box full. Anyway it is "free" delivery.

Perhaps I should advise all of my friends that this years Xmas cards are all "customer collect". :D La Poste is just a transporter in this respect.
Now there's a thought. It would save a fortune in postage.

Misunderstood wording of question.

As you were.

It sounds like OP needs the French equivalent of Palletline.
