For the first time in many years we took advantage of the JdeP.
We drove down to Eauze to visit the Roman museum and archeological dig.
Really interesting, there is potential for more digging but I think they’re lacking funds. Eauze is full of interesting ancient buildings.

There weren’t many people when we were there which is a shame.

The Romans had a great set up. Of course it relied on bullying the local population into submission and using slave Labour. Does this sound familiar?

I went to the SGVA* event. Equally not over crowded but that gave a good chance to discuss the work with the volunteers. Likewise they are constrained by cash availability.

There were supposed to be visits out to the island Fort de la Conchée off Saint Malo for the JdeP but unfortunately the organisers' boat had problems so they were cancelled.
It's one of the many forts designed by Vauban and is being restored by its current owners. It's something we'd like to see but we were working this weekend so couldn't have done it this year anyway. It's tricky getting a boat alongside particularly if there's a swell. The ship in the photo is a very accurate replica of the Renard, which was owned by the famous Saint Malo buccaneer Robert Surcouf (we'd never heard of him before coming here !). One day we'll get around to going out on it ....

My first thought when seeing structures like this is.............how on earth did they build something like this without modern machinery?

I agree, Hotrodder. As far as how on earth did they build that kind of structure in the old days, I always wonder how they built the Ar Men lighthouse off the coast of Finistère with a limited number of spring tides a year.

We have had the same in the UK this weekend with Heritage Day on Saturday especially but a few events over the past week
