https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-60059542Pity the French left-winger as he or she contemplates the upcoming presidential elections.
For the first time in living memory, there is not a single candidate from their camp among the front-runners ahead of the April vote.
The highest-ranking leftist, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, is in fifth place at about 9% in the polls, outperformed by a centrist President Emmanuel Macron, a conservative in Valérie Pécresse and two far-right wingers in Marine Le Pen and Eric Zemmour.

French elections : Is the left doomed ?
Much like the "Left" in the UK, they're just not gutsy enough it seems.
Let's hope Macron wins again - he may not be perfect (is there such a thing in Politician Land?), but I sleep easier with him in charge than I would if any of the Right Brigade got in.

+1 Bayleaf.
Same old tired policies and candidates. OK Hidalgo is new to la présidentielle, but she hasn't exactly set the world on fire. Taubira is just a bad joke.

Pecresse is our choice - we've had enough of Macron and his joke of a Prime Minister

Macron for me, the least worst, but isn't that always the case?

Well, if the worst President in modern history is thinking the left is so bad he stands a chance, the answer must be a resounding "YES".

French elections : Is the left doomed ?
Not this time. There is just a glimmer of a possibility that there is a genuine alternative, or two. On the other hand, if French politics are going to continue to follow US and Brit trends, it's the Press and media who will have the final say (depending on whose pocket the various outlets are in, and whether there will be another carefully orchestrated political assassination). It's quite enlightening to talk 'Zemmour' with French friends. They don't seem to have the knee-jerk reaction of many Brits, more prepared to try to find out about the person and the reality behind the smear campaigns etc., perhaps? I've no axe to grind
