Wasn't it claimed at one point that certain riders were using wheels that were "more round"?

The “rounder wheels” comment came from Team Sky when they answering questions on their superior performance . Though Wiggins did have an elliptical crank

This year's contre la montre was much more interesting than usual. Vingegaard made excellent time and didn't change bikes which would have lost him 10 to 15 seconds. Good to see the Yateses up in the top 10 👍

In the heyday of French cycling about the only one not taking performance enhancing drugs was Raymond Poulidor who was criticised by colleagues and team mates for not doing so. He always refused and was always the bridesmaid and not the bride.

Tommy Simpson's death on Ventoux was caused by a cocktail of drugs and brandy. It was commonplace in those days and accepted.

Fortunately for the cyclists (and athletes) that has changed. It's sad the risks some would take to win ....
I don't think there's been any notable doping on the Tour since Lance Armstrong. That was not an easy call because it was already pretty amazing how he continued after being diagnosed and treated for cancer. It was years before he actually admitted it.

Mathieu van der Poel is Raymond Poulidor's grandson - it would be nice if he could do well.

Suspicions are being raised in the cycling press on Vinegard’s exceptional performance. I hope he is clean.

It's easy to say that none of them would think of it today, but the will to win, and perhaps pressure from sponsors (fear of losing a place on the team ?) could make some take risks.
In the past, many sportsmen were fed enhancers without really knowing what they were taking. We saw some extreme cases in East bloc athletes :( Many of those now say they regret it, lost their youth etc etc.

Ah yes! Those female shot putters from East Germany built like Desperate Dan who suddenly disappeared when sexuality tests were introduced 😅

Tom Pidcock was asked to give a 1 word answer to Vinegar’s performance in the TT. He refused to answer.
