How to whiten grout ?

#1 Post by leclairon »

I saw the post on epoxy grout - think our kitchen tiles have just normal grout. Is there a way of getting the white grout cleaner, whiter again? I have tried combinations on different products - scrubbing with a brush between the tiles but nothing seems to whiten the grout. The tiles are white - I wish now we had put a different coloured grout.

I once tried a Polycell product - and it was useless. Peeled off in days

Sadly, I think rake it out and redo the grout may be answer - that is what I plan in daughters bathroom (unless someone else posts a solution!).

Neat bleach and a toothbrush may work. Standard Eau de Javel is 2.6% but you can get stronger if you look around- La Croix do one 4.6%. Do however make sure that eyes (particularly) and skin are protected and be prepared to throw away clothing. Standard Javel will leave bleach marks on coloured clothing. The stronger stuff tends to rot fabrics - especially cotton based.

Thanks. Have tried bleach, vinegar, baking soda, PinkStuff.Am about to try Hydrogen Peroxide mixed to paste with baking soda. I read to leave it on to fizz then brush off. I did send for a product fromAmazon which didn't work either - that might have been the one mentioned.

Think regrouting will be the answer.

Iwondered about painting the tiles 'with special tile paint?? (apparently it works) and painting right over the grout ...
not sure if the tiles would peel, and the grout also, as they are two different surfaces. Iwonder if it is possible to , say, paint the grout grey with one of those grout pens I saw advertised?

The Polycell product I mentioned painted over the grout - it was almost like the white correction film you use from a dispenser to cover typos etc - it didn't bind to the grout - and peeled off.

Get a multitool blade but don't go too deep - otherwise you might also cut into any backing board!

I have just rinsed down the sample grouting I sprayed in the shower with the product I recommended earlier; the result is spectacular, in fact like new. It goes on as a foam and stinks of chlorine but is really effective.
