Artex was a boon for people trying to deal with bad walls. Apart from the original mix was laced with asbestos, the problem was either because of bad application or the fact that any pattern suffered the same fate as wallpaper. Simply going out of fashion. Removal was often achieved with the aid of a blowlamp, and a prayer.

Remember "PolyTex" or something like that brought out to compete with Artex? It had tiny plastic balls to provide a type of texture.

Apparently it claimed to be waterproof so a colleague used it to cover his bathroom walls where he had a shower over the bath. One Monday he came in to work but could hardly use his arm or shoulder. He had taken a shower, slipped in the bath and run his side down the wall.

Like a match on sandpaper!
