PAINT FOR FULL SUN
@ Hotrodder, I almost can smell this nitrocellulose when I see this picture of a product of my own copycat engineering. A friend of mine, drummer, took several snapshots in the Marquee club, the Who in action, around 1963 or1964. With a new Danelectro bass, longhorn. Interesting I thought, much too expensive, work for the DIY, let's give it a try. Made a full scale drawing measuring the guitar's dimensions and started building. Finish with a spray gun, no mask, no brush.

Three layers of marine plywood, special glue, band saw. The bass player of the Golden Earring also liked it, but not for sale....missed opportunity?

@ Hotrodder, drifting even further away from the original topic, paint for spotlights, another white guitar (not DIY): The Cat, cat in more detail and The Cat that looked somehow familiar.

You're taking me back to my Strat days. Never satisfied with the factory sunburst finish, I did a pale yellow respray loaded with pearl pigment. The rest of the guys liked it so much I had to do theirs to match. No photos.

The colour black got an honourable mention, see this writing on the wall, entrance gate, Abbey Road Studios. Not sure about the type of paint they use in felt-tip pens.

I dont know how true it is, but when we first moved to France, we were told not to bother importing paint from the uk, as paint is tailored for the market that it is sold in, and paint in the UK was tailored to cope better with cooler damper weather, and not the drier hotter weather that we certainly get in southern france.Loup-garou wrote: ↑Sat Aug 09, 2025 11:47 am Thanks again everyone especially for the pictures RA and the tip about "peinture-destock.com" Headers. Like you, I had hoped to effect a good job this time and not need to worry about it in the future. Time Madam L-G received some lessons in outside painting methinks!
I am not averse to getting paint from the UK and use Sadolin a lot to good effect but that has always been on virgin wood as opposed to old stripped back wood.
But as I said at the begining, although there is logic to what I was told, I have never bothered to investigate.

The advice you were given is absolutely true. Paints are formulated for the climate in the area they are sold. I got this from a paint industry technician while attending a paint products seminar. A few rare gambles with ignoring this advice have given a good result (Sadolins), and total disaster (Cuprinol).

A big thank you for your time in contributing and to the Forum for being there.
I found some Antique Oak - Sadolin on the Pienture Destock site. Unfortunately, they only had it in titchy tins so I cleared them out of the nine tins they had in stock. It is generally recommended for it's high UV resistance so we'll see!
