Here was me thinking cam belts were better than chains, maybe not better but cheaper for the manufacturers and suggesting replacement at intervals so they make more money later on. In pre-historic days a chain was the norme and I never even heard of one needing replacement or failing with catastrophic damage to the engine. Progress

Thats one good thing about the Rav4, I don’t know about the later models, but mine has a chain.

Cam belts, cheaper, less noise and monsieur le garagiste is happy to welcome the happy owners for a regular check. Risk of an engine blowup. Metal distrinution chains are more expensive, last much, much longer. Only 1, 2 or 3 dB extra noise ? Frankly, I can live with that in exchange for slightly more carefree motoring and less maintenance costs.

3dB extra noise - not noise over and above silence. Hence twice as loud as without.
