Asking for a client - does anyone know whether such a licence has to be translated for driving in France?
I wouldn't have thought so, but what do I know?

AFAIK no need for translation. I got one in 2019 as was worried re Brexit when I was still living in UK and coming to France frequently. I looked into it then but the rules could have changed by now....

Had one to visit W.A. back in 2009.
Got another one after brexit just in case, for uk visits.
All pages have the pics and codes which I'm qualified for, think they'r the same all over as in front of mine are a number of pages each in dif languages, English one should be the same but who knows if its uk now.

My recollection from many moons ago (so may no longer be valid) is that the international licence issued in the UK is written in many languages including French.

Are you talking about the International Driving Permit or a foreign licence?

The international. They have their own separate (foreign) national licences.
A quick search on French sites has produced nothing definitive, nothing clear-cut.

I thought that the IDP was simply a translation to go alongside the national licence.
