Bangernomics is the answer.

I sold my father's newish low-mileage Toyota with lots of on-board electronics and gizmos to go wrong and kept a nicely run-in and reliable old Volvo with now 400K on the clock.

I agree, my wagon is only 17 years young and I am still investing in repairs.

I have three cars. The youngest is 16 years old and they have an average age of 42.

We have a 1987 VW Transporter camper which I am just fitting with a new engine, a 1994 Alfa 33 Trofeo with 120k km and a 1996 Audi Avant with 75k km on the clock. All garaged or kept covered, with their (lead acid) batteries on CTEK automatic chargers. All have spent their lives in dry climates and have practically no corrosion.
I'm hoping we never have to buy another car. We spent a lot of time finding those we have.
I thought almost everyone would know about those insane batteries by now.
Those with smart phones or other portable devices should have gained some idea of the life of lithium-ion batteries.
Or do they change phones etc. so frequently they never reach the lifetime of the batteries?

You make a good point about the early replacement.
There used to be a saying about people who would replace the car when the ash tray was full. People are much the same with phones these days. Either that or they are such crap they don't last and have joined the "disposable" category like paper cups and lolly sticks.

Would you leave on a trip to the UK in one of them tomorrow?
