How are vehicle batteries measured?
By that I mean actual physical size.
I've been looking on line for a replacement tractor battery. I've no idea how many Ah or cranking amps it is but it's a biggun.
The existing battery is on it's last legs & was bought by me at a local agricultural merchants by simply comparing it's physical size & connection post positions with those on display. More than 10 years later it's had it's day.
The thing is that my battery has a 'flange', for want of a better term, around the top which is 15mm wider & 40mm longer than the body.
My battery's body size of 470mm x 170mm is a very close fit in the battery compartment lengthwise.
Looking on line, all similar size batteries are 510 - 513mm long (width & height are no problem within reason) so I'm wondering if this is the measurement of the 'flange'.
I'm off to the Agri store tomorrow but in case they don't have one I can measure I may have to order on line, hence my query.

Have a play - https://www.tayna.co.uk/tools/battery-wizard - may give you a battery type.
Just to add, a car battery should not be used in a tractor if you want it to last.

Thanks for that. It's showing lenth of 513mm but doesn't say if it's body or flange size which was my original query. Good site but I think I'll have to ask them the question, niemeyjt wrote: ↑Wed Mar 29, 2023 8:42 pm Have a play - https://www.tayna.co.uk/tools/battery-wizard - may give you a battery type.

Yeah, I know tractor batteries take a physical hammering compared to cars.
Just noticed they're UK based so couldn't order from them but possible usefull info non the less.

You must be joking
It weighs a ton & there's no way I'm struggling to remove & take it to the merchants when I can measure it

Seems like nobody knows how & where batteries are measured.
Probably doesn't matter in most cases but it's a very important bit of info for me if I'm gonna spend probably over €200 to buy a battery on line only to find it won't fit by just a few mm.
My gut reaction is the measurements are overall including the flange which accomodates two rope handles for lifting it but us'll see.

But if it coming out anyway why not remove it and take it with you, you can then leave it there to be disposed of properly by someone else, saving you the trouble.L Austin France wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 9:41 amYou must be joking![]()

Because at the moment I need it as it still starts my tractor but is unreliable after about 10 years of abuse.Polarengineer wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 9:58 amBut if it coming out anyway why not remove it and take it with you, you can then leave it there to be disposed of properly by someone else, saving you the trouble.L Austin France wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 9:41 amYou must be joking![]()

I'm not going to all the faff of taking it for a drive if I'm not sure there's one available locally & I certainly wouldn't be asking for advice here if I'd already checked that.

Oops, sorry, I must try to be better at reading between lines. I was under the impression that the battery had failed after 10 years. But an unreliable battery is a new one for me, my experience is that it works or it is flat (low voltage). Reliability lies in the connections, AVR and the alternator. My post was meant to help in that it could save you a journey. Here is my advice, the dimensions given online are the overall dimensions, now you can go with that or wait for someone to do the search for you to prove it is so.
