I guess problems will start when one of those heads-up signs blocks a child (or anything else) about to run out.

Not daft at all. It displays important information in a way that doesn't require you to take your eyes off the road ahead. I am surprised it has taken so long to bring the idea to cars. Back in 1967 I worked on prototype circuitry for "heads up display" systems for use in fighter aircraft. The information can easily be projected to any position and be adjusted in intensity (automatically for day/night driving).

It seems odd that people who are generally so happy to have more and more invasive techno crap in new cars could be so "anti" something that is clearly a big step forward in safety.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

I think it is fascinating. I suspect it will evolve from the initial abilities.

Maybe - but won't driverless make it redundant?

Driverless is a long way off. Be assured.

Glad I'm old and unlikely to live long enough to see many - if any - of these 'improvements'!

Fighter pilots have been using similar technology for years without any obvious problems. There have also been cars that have projected the speed onto the windscreen. I can’t see it being distracting at all.
