My old Deutz tractor has the silencer rising vertically out of the bonnet. It's a 'drop on' fit to enable easy removal when the bonnet has to be raised.
Today I took delivery of a new rotary broyeur which needs 1,900 engine rpm to give the required 540 rpm at the power take off.
I've only ever run the engine at a max 1,500 rpm as this has suited the gear I've needed power to.
A couple of runs across the field at 1,900 rpm & the silencer was almost blown off the exhaust manifold so seems like it's gunged up, creating pressure & not allowing the engine to develope full power.
The silencer is not the original as this was leaking & baffles shot & is the nearest new'un I could find. For the interim I've drilled & tapped the silencer/manifold for a 6mm bolt to avoid the embarrasment of the silencer blowing off & joining me in the cabin via the windscreen & am researching ways of cleaning out the silencer.
Soaking in engine degreaser seems favourite at the moment.
Anyone got any ideas?

Replace with a piece of scaffold pipe (or the old one if you still have it)?

Get a silencer off another tractor with a larger engine i.e. greater throughput - maybe this one is "too small"?

Investigate a different gearing on the PTO input - or the belts on the side - and reduce to 1500 rpm again?

The non-original silencer might just be too restrictive even if it is not partially bunged. Think about an original (if they are still available) or a length of suitable diameter pipe with no silencer.
Don't forget to drop an empty bean can over the top when you park it up to keep the rain out.

Nice answers chaps but I was actually asking if anyone knew how to de-bung the silencer I have which I'm quite sure is up to the job if clear.
I'm off today to buy a large can of engine cleaner which hopefully will do the job.
Hotrodder, the bean can lives in the cab so ready for emergencies. Don't half shoot off a long way if I forget to remove it before starting the old boy.

OH says caustic soda is the thing to use ....... he's just off to the garage to check the French name of the stuff - he's a mechanic ....... be back in a mo.

I would suggest trying to burn it out then - after all, that is how modern cars clear the crud out of DPFs. Not sure whether soot (assuming that is what is the problem) will dissolve in anything.

He says you'll find it in the Bricos where they have the litre bottles of white spirit, linseed oil etc; its in a plastic bottle.

Next question. Do I pour it through the silencer or bung up one end & fill it up with the stuff to let it work?
