I think that's been Nationwide's policy for quite a while @MAD87. They started off with something like 2.5% 'commission' on cash withdrawals, and have been stealthily increasing it over the years.
To get back to Amazon, does this Visa business apply to the european sites too? I thought it was just Amazon UK?

I don't yet know whether it's NW or Crédit Ag. I have a lot of accounts, both here and in the UK. I want to be able to choose what I do with my own money...
As for Amazon, according to the Beeb article, it's "Visa in the UK" whatever that means.

Penny to a pound it will be in your Nationwide T&Cs for using a GBP based card in a EUR world.

If it is any joy (and I am sure it won't be) I get charged €5.98 for withdrawing cash in France using my German bank card. And yes it's in their T&Cs.

Nominal it is your bank that gets the money but I would guess that they have fees to settle with the bank where you withdrew the cash. In practice I think both banks benefit. Keeps folk in work though.

Digitec Galaxus, the Swiss mini Amazon, had a similar falling out with Twint - a mobile phone-based payment app that bumped their charges up.

A few months later, Twint had a change of mind, it seems and are now accepted once more.

As I say, a new starting point in negotiations - not end of the line.

I think the EU has rules on how much card companies can charge, so I reckon as a result of a certain Brexit, Visa UK (and others, maybe eventually) is now free to do as it pleases with regards to charges.

Is that travellers from the UK, ie with UK providers, or travellers to the UK with EU providers. Not that I am ever intending to visit again, but just interested.

Years ago I stopped using my NWide debit card here to draw cash for the monthly food shop of around 400 euros. If I remember correctly the charge was £1 for using the ATM and 2% on the amount drawn and the exchange rate was dire. We like using cash so more would be drawn for 'other' things. Then having read advice from others on a forum - and having had my head in the sand - I realised I would be far better off using a currency exchange & transfer company!
