About AMAZON and payments between member states of the EU. I just made a phone call asking for a clarification why VISA refused my payment for something ordered using the German AMAZON. To recap: 30 minutes after ordering and paying with my Visa account I received an email from Amazon.de, sorry, payment not accepted, use another (bank)account. Their message: " ....leider ist die Zahlung dieser Bestellung fehlgeslagen.......bitten wir Sie, Ihre Zahlungsart innerhalb der nächsten 5 Tage auf Kreditkarte umzustellen." My Visa account mentioned a payment of € 0 for Amazon.

What went wrong? The two-factor authentication (2FA) has not yet been (fully) implemented by Amazon in Germany. They still use the al-in-the-family approach: for members we try to make the ordering/buying experience as easy as possible. A bit surprising because mandatory as of 1 January 2021.

I prefer Visa payments for this type of transactions, ordering measuring equipment or tools, delivery etc, insurance included.

Is that travellers from the UK, ie with UK providers, or travellers to the UK with EU providers. Not that I am ever intending to visit again, but just interested. :)
It depends on your provider. You should check with them.

On Saturday, I used my Nationwide card to withdraw cash to give as a present (I use my UK pension for such fripperies). €50 and I was charged €5 commisssion. I haven't yet had the time to discover who the fiver is going to....
I got charged €5 on a withdrawal of €500 with my mastercard - so it seems that it is a new fixed charge. But who gets it?

A quick check, the RABO bank in The Netherlands: cash withdrawal in euros in the member states of the EU: € 0.75 per withdrawal. Outside the EU in foreign currency: € 3.50 per withdrawal + 1.2 % currency conversion fee. Sometimes extra costs charged by the foreign bank.

According to BBC Radio4 this morning. U.K. issued Visa credit cards are affected. Visa charges have increased significantly since Brexit freed them of EU credit card charge capping. Amazon have baulked at this and this is their opening shot in negotiating with Visa.

Sparkle wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 12:18 pm Years ago I stopped using my NWide debit card here to draw cash for the monthly food shop of around 400 euros. If I remember correctly the charge was £1 for using the ATM and 2% on the amount drawn and the exchange rate was dire. We like using cash so more would be drawn for 'other' things. Then having read advice from others on a forum - and having had my head in the sand - I realised I would be far better off using a currency exchange & transfer company!
I never got into the habit of pulling cash from my UK bank out of a French ATM. The pennies tend to ad up. My strategy is to only get cash from my LaPoste Banque account from one of their own ATMs and the account gets fed once a month from my UK bank using Wise. (ex Transferwise) Never pay a penny in charges to Nationwide, which helps because we get charged for having a French account.
On my headstone it will say: Please switch off mobile phones. I'm trying to get some sleep.

I guess down the line we will find Visa and the various Mobile Phone Companies have "donated" to Conservative Party Funds for selected EU legislation not to have been transcribed directly into post-Brexit UK Law.

The Nationwide debit used to be the 'go to' card for France as you got totally commission free withdrawals, we opened an account there before moving to France in 2008 for that very reason and for the first two or three years that was pretty much our sole source of money, two cards x £300 each per month.
