Maybe fig roll and custard attracts bats. Maybe the bat was concerned you were asking it to dry the dishes.

How about two soot-covered rooks which somehow got down the chimney in our lounge.

Was there a nasty mess? We had a pigeon drop down our chimney years ago, managed to catch it by throwing a bath sheet over it when my husband whipped the electric fire away. Rushed outside with it, shook the towel then put the it straight in for a boil wash; it seemed not to have suffered, and as the dark pigeon flew off I don’t think it suffered too much either.

All I could see was two pairs of bright eyes behind the fire guard.
I stood by with a sheet while my wife took away the guard, but it was one of those large domed fire guards, and I missed them completely.
We had the door and windows to the outside open, but they collided with the walls and furniture a few times before finding their way out, and did make quite mess. Coal fire soot is such nasty stuff.

Still no sign of a return Flight of the Batty Bat!

Speaking of birds down the chimney, I rescued a little chap/chapess from our kitchen woodburner flue. It's all exposed, so was easy to hear something was gradually scraping and slowly falling to the bottom. First thought was "what the heck is that?!" Then, being brave   , I removed the ash trap at the bottom and waited for something to drop out. Thankfully, it was only a little bird - coughing and splutting and a tad blackened. Before I could catch it, it blindly flew around the kitchen until finding refuge on a wall (we have VERY rough walls here!) Eventually caught it somehow and took the little fella outside and placed it on a branch nearby - I think it may have been a fledgling, as it sounded like a parent was calling very close by. We just looked at each other for a while, and then I went to get the camera for a close-up photo opportunity. Of course, they always know when the camera is coming out - it had gone when I returned. Thankfully a happy ending. :)

Every year (in Bédoin) we would have bats nesting behind our wood volets. The worse part was the mess they leave on the exterior window ledge. Once one evening while the windows were open, one flew in. I don't mind them outside, but I really don't want them inside.

I closed the door to the room where the bat was and left the window open. Took a little while, but he did fly out.

We've had birds in the chimney also.

Worse was when the house was on the market and we were out of town. Came home to find bird droppings all over the house, dead bird on floor. We presumed it came in when a real estate agent opened the house to show it. They always seem to leave all the doors open. Horrible mess.

Speaking of bats and birds leaving trademarks around houses, can anyone identify this deposit?
It was quite a large mound on a window sill. I knocked it off onto the ground before I thought of taking a photo.
It was tucked under the folded volet on the RHS of the picture.
I never had any reasonable suggetions as to what left it, but it looks like the remains and stones of dates, so I just wondered if there are any fruit bats in S France?

I think I remember seeing that before and I still think it is a stone martin. What time of year was the picture taken? That may give us some more clues
