We tried everything too, except the 12-bore although a friend tried that (unsuccessfully).
I eventually got rid of them in my last 2 gardens, following the advice of a French neighbour/professional gardener who told me to dig out each hole, find each chamber (4-6 generally) and fill the chambers with brambles. A long, laborious job although we had plenty of brambles to use.
Once finished, we never had another molehill.

I have tried all of the above plus a few more. Connect the exhaust pipe of a tractor to the tunnels to asphyxiate them. Set off old fireworks and out of date emergency flares down the tunnels. Conventional traps (three different types). Poke chlorine tablets down the holes. None of these produced a result. I must have spent well over a hundred euros on petards after spending over €60 each for two controllers. Zilch.
Someone suggested inserting calcium carbide down the holes but its not easy to source here.
If I could afford it I would like to try a Rodenator. Google it.

I think it would impact some economies if people learned to live in harmony with them.

After 22 years our first battle with moles. We gave it a try with coffee ground. Cease fire for nearly three days. Now he/she is back. Back to square one, restart procedure.

It's nice to see someone trying to discourage them rather than killing them.

I do that as well makes lovely soil for the potager.

Not a potager, to feed hungry flowers. Our hortensias, once a little corner full of them, need an everyday service: water and water. Only three survivors. Time for less demanding creeping geraniums, groundcover. Two wheelbarrows for this little triangle bathing in the evening sun, hoping it will speed up their growth.
