Whatever it was, I couldn't work out where it found dates. Definitely no date palms around here.

They look like date stones but is it possible that they are damson or quetsch stone? August would fit for these fruits just coming into ripeness.
What I am not seeing is the crease line that date stones have - so a cross section would look a bit like a heart shape.
