The hedgehogs are back!

For a week or so now we have had hedgehog poo on our lawn. Tonight my wife went to check the food we put out for them and lo and behold there was a sow and a boar! We have had these charming creatures returning for years now and hopefully we will see some hoglets soon.

Just a little question. Why are you posting your threads in UK Only section? Would this be better in Wildlife, and your previous topic about your birthday maybe in Chatter - more people are likely to see them there.

Can I ask, what food do you put out for the hedgehogs?

We put a watered mix of dry and wet food out for the 4 cats every evening, but it seems it's often a hedgehog that comes to dine. I looked it up and as long as there's water either in the food or close by, it's fine for hogs.

Because I got a message from someone on here saying that because I live in England I should post personal stuff on UK only. Not moderators!

Well, it means I shall have to get out a stick for the dog and a metal shovel to pick up the hedgies with and roll them next door. An annual rictual!

This garden is heavily fenced but they get into the garden somehow where the dog attacks and kills them. When his dander is up the only way to stop him is a sharp and not too hard whack on the a*se. So I have to listen every evening for his characteristic barks and grunts when he is dragging the poor things across the lawn, regardless of the pain.

Would another means to stop your dog from killing hedgehogs be to keep him in the house in the evenings?

That way, the hedgehogs can enjoy some safe time in the garden, you aren't required to listen out for hedgehog death throes and your dog can avoid being on the receiving end of a sharp kick.

Fair comment, but I am now pretty much attuned to his antics. He hasnt had one for a while as I think the hedgies have gone elsewhere.
By the by, he doesnt get a kick but a gentle reminder with a stick, just enough to warn him off.
