France in Focus

Iam a bit stumped on this one, the last week or so I have heard this bird at night, it stops in the morning, have checked on the usual sites but to no avail its a quick "hoot hoot" sound, deepish sounding, but quickly, then repeated but it can be ten seconds or a lot longer a minuet or more, just the same sound. Have lived here for a long time and never heard this before so it could be a visitor from further afield, any thoughts?

No idea, Spectrum - but if you have a smartphone, there is an app called Birdnet - you can record the sound and the app will identify the bird. I don't have a smartphone, but I've seen it used successfully by others !

To obvious but first thoughts are an owl, as with plumage bird voices vary a lot in different regions. as said without a recording job to tell

Thanks I do have a smart phone its smarter than me so it must be we don't have a signal here and I will be a bit reluctant to be walking round the garden with jim jams on with my arm raised high in the air, you don't know whats about these days

Well you wouldn't want to meet me as I don't own any, be an even bigger shock, not that I'm one to boast.

The European Nightjar can make odd noises

Have listened to all the recordings I can find, its properly just a lazy owl that cant be bothered with all this hooting We have Nightjars and Nightingales in the woods so not one of them, thanks.

As posted in found in the garden, this year we have loads of finches around.
Today a great surprise with dozens of bramblings flitting through the trees, never seen so many together before, hope its not s sign of a very cold winter.

I have a big feeding station in the garden. Lots of bramblings, sparrows, tits, 2 robins and yesterday my first gros bec of the season. He is massively bigger than everything else! Last year I didn’t see any. The year before I had 5.
If I could work out how to post a pic, I would!
