I'm bugged if I know
Found 6 of these in a garden planter I was emptying. They're about 1 1/2 " long.
Anyone know what they are?

Every year there"s a discussion about these things : hanneton ou cétoine !!
I think it's a cétoine, one of those gorgeous metallic green beetles, but try checking here :

Cockchafer back in UK.
We get pots and containers full of the larva and have to change the compost every year as the bloody things eat the roots of plants.
If you get a plant looking sad it's probably them.
Don't need to throw compost away just put it through a seive.

Sorry to correct you Doug, but the cockchafer (maybug) is the hanneton - he's the brown job !
The Cétoine dorée is a rose chafer and the beautiful green beetle you see on flowers.

They say that the CĂ©toine has a small head and a big bum and the Hanneton has a larger head and jaw and a smaller backside !
It's not always easy to see the difference.

Don't worry, Doug, they're very similar - and I had to look up the English words that I'd forgotten
