Hip dysplasia in dogs

#11 Post by Blaze »

@Loup-garou Ah, another member who's forum name was after a border collie - Blaze was a very special rescued BC.

There are various treatments for hip dysplasia and it depends on the dog, its age, breed, and of course the vet ....

Fifi has had "juvenile pubic symphysiodesis" which is a comparatively simple procedure because we spotted a problem when she was young enough - it works best at 14-16 weeks. Most dogs with hip dysplasia aren't so fortunate because the symptoms haven't been spotted early enough (it's not always easy). I've always been very attentive to the way animals move having been with them all my life. It would have been very easy to dismiss the way Fifi walked with "Oh she's a pup, she's all legs, she'll grow out of it". We have an excellent vet cabinet here and we can't praise them enough for their reactivity.

Hip dysplasia in dogs

Yes Loup-garou was rescued. The local authority were dealing with a single mother with, with three children under five and a rottweiler who then bought LG from a pet shop so, no doubt, puppy farm bred.

The specialist stressed that had LG been any more than 16 kilos he could not have had his operations so not really available for normal border collies.

Glad you spotted and dealt with Fifi's hips early and she can look forward to a happy active life.
