Social charges on UK state pension

#11 Post by exile »

That is absolutely correct. If you worked in and retired in France, then France is your competent state and you do pay social charges on all income.

I went through all the research on this being in a slightly different situation having worked in Germany prior to retirement but retired to France from there. It was then down to who was my competent state for healthcare. Since I had more years of NI contributions than healthcare contributions in Germany, the UK is my competent state and issued an S1.

The rules can seem unfair but that is how it is.

It is also worth saying that as a retiree to another country and receiving healthcare benefits, you are required to continue making healthcare contributions to your competent state. In the case of France that is the social charges. In the case of the UK that is NI contributions - but as pensioners are exempt from NI contributions, that means we pay nothing.

But watch for future budgets, that could change.

@Chris - You had originally only mentioned needing to put UK pensions total in box 8TV (or 8TH or 8TX) and not mentioned your S1 or other pensions which caused the confusion.

I think this page https://moncourtierfrontalier.com/decla ... te-suisse/ for a cross-border worker Swiss pension probably gives a complete outline applicable to declaring the pensions including a complete table of when to use 8TV (or 8TH or 8TX) depending on your RFR and including possible reductions

Thanks for all the info.
Our accountant rang in response to our email a few days ago. He confirmed all the above and promised to correct our déclaration with the fisc, rassuring me that the sum due would be "minime". I hope he's right!
