Sorting out my S1

Thanks Sparkle that is very helpful.

We did get certified copies of our birth and marriage. Certificates so that is one tick off the list.

I can remember addresses (how far back do you need to go?) but job dates not so sure.

I'll download the pension form and take a look.

You need to confirm all your work history from day 1, but the dates don't need to be precise, just the year will do. As it is, when you get your pension there is no accompanying explanation of how it was calculated so you can't verify their figures. I found that worrying but I suspect that even if they did explain it, pension rules have changed so much I don't know if I would have been capable of checking. As I recall, you don't need to provide birth or marriage certificates if you were born in the UK.

@manonthemoon2 I started with home addresses from birth as we moved homes and counties quite a few times. For work I listed all of my jobs from when I started work and paid NI contributions. I don't leave anything to chance so probably bombarded them with more than was necessary! But also my mum remarried just before I started work and I took the new surname but it wasn't official so I reported 'in Part 10 Other Information' that my birth surname wasn't my work surname for my first 6 years of work! I think with job dates a reasonable guess will be OK. It's amazing how much you do remember when you have time to sit down for several hours and think back as to where you were and what you were doing at a certain point in time. A City I lived in has a forum which I'm a member of and I got some very useful replies on company name changes and addresses where I'd worked in the 1970s!

You can check your NI Contributions here but you have to sign in and I'm sure not sure I found it that helpful other than it confirmed I'd worked over the 30 year requirement for a full OAP however, cos I'd opted out of SERPS I didn't quite get the full state pension.

I won't get the full state pension as I haven't worked since 2003 when we moved to France, so I know already I don't have enough years. I have a forecast which suggests I top up

Unless you have some severely life limiting problem, topping up is really a no brainer. OH was invited to top up (having already made voluntary contributions) and at that stage 15 months pension repaid the top up.

I'm not sure I agree, @exile. I paid a hefty lump sum to top up my pension before leaving the UK. Then the goalposts changed, and not only was I robbed of 6 years-worth of pension but the forecast now informs me that I won't get a full pension because there are, (guess what?) 6 years contributions missing  Even if I had the money to top up again, I don't think I'd risk it. Where do you, or the UK gov, stop?

@Quiksilver Same here as my shortfall wasn't worth the amount of topping up and for me I thought better off in a savings account for OH if I snuffed it early. Guess it depends on how much you need to put in and how close to collecting you are, at the time I was 14 years away for collecting and then the rules changed and the basic pension increased considerably for those collecting after April 2016 least I think that's when it was

Progress update on my S1. There has been no progress since I chased them a month ago.
I went through the same conversation as I did a month ago and had the same response. Blah blah 15 days etc etc. So I did I will ring again just before my 66 birthday if they have not sent it by then.
I have an appointment with my surgeon on 4/9 for which theoretically I won’t be covered so I’ll need to apply for some special certificate. Oh well. Goodness knows how long this will all take. I suppose I should be grateful for small mercies that I’m still alive to get my pension and S1.

Do not send off the original S1 .. make a few copies of it (in colour preferably) and send one of those to CPAM; keep the original unless you are threatened with dire consequences.
