As if we didnt already know this; there are too many layers of administration in France, frequently overlapping. Remove a layer or two, yeah, my fesses, the fonctionnaires are too entrenched to be got rid of, like cancers in places where medicine cant:

And again, too many chiefs and not enough indians.

When I saw the title, I wondered if it was connected to the Flamme olympique which is costing a fortune, so much so that one department in Brittany (22) has refused to have it. I imagine there are plenty of others who would prefer to see money spent otherwise.

I heard it costs 300k to have the match lit in each commune.

It was nearly sorted (a bit) in 2017. François Fillon was going to reduce the number of foncs by 500,000, so he said. It was a bit daft saying it before being elected, though As things turned out, he never got the chance
It's certainly true that there are way too many layers of admin. Not to mention political (bandwagon) ones like the Agglos and C de Cs.

We keep hearing different figures but whatever the cost, it's high. I think the budget varies from department to department but it's going through several communes in our department (35).

That said, we've jumped at the chance of being SNSM first aiders when the it goes to Mont Saint Michel and Saint Malo. We'll be in a tent at the foot of the Mont on Friday (hope the tide's out !) and on Saturday we'll be nicely tucked up in an ambulance watching the cortège pass by then taking up the rear to pick up any survivors.
