Yes you are right during 2018 a few comrades and I whom I had not met for 35 years paid our respects to the fallen of our old Regiment and visited their graves

Not in the Italian Alps north of Turin, it is the almost brandnew "La Caverne du Pont d'Arc" in the Ardèche. Many years ago we visited several caves in the Cevennes, this one is something new to discover the past.

Quite correct @RobertArthur but I think @basquesteve actually knew the location with his old and new statement. It would be near his route from the Alps to his home.
La Caverne du Pont d'Arc is a faithful reproduction of the Grotte Chauvet which has what are described as the oldest cave paintings in the world. The external concrete structure of the picture represents the cliffs where the real cave is located. Almost immediately after discovery the original cave was shut to all to protect the paintings and other artefacts by the Ministry of Culture. This included the discoverer J-M Chauvet who was at the time a park ranger for the Ministry of Culture!

@RobertArthur I think it is yours.
While I am pretty sure that @basquesteve knew the answer, he did not actually give the name. You however did.

To make things a little easier: you could have already caught a glimpse of this city from an earlier photo here on the forum:
