Or too many people - allowing an extra 1.4M people into the UK in the past two years when there was already a housing emergency was never going to end well.

However, given that the politicians of both sides need to encourage not discourage landlords to make housing available.

If the owner of a dwelling pays nothing into a system
then I think that Proudhon was probably right.

Rental income is subject to income tax at the prevailing rates. As a house is pretty firmly fixed to the UK, even if the landlord is overseas, under most tax treaties the HMRC receives said taxes.

Of course, the cash in hand sheds with beds are different - but I am talking about legitimate landlords who obey the rules.

I had people like the Duke of Westminster in mind.

In the past I lived in more than one rented flat where the local council were trying to find the owner of the property. Seems hard to imagine that could happen now.
#2 though I would not be surprised if it did.

But isn't his stuff leasehold to Grosvenor Estate as opposed to assured short hold tenancy?

I don’t know.

But, I know of somebody who was a tentant of a London and Quadrant house who was profiteering by sub letting on terms that were not legal. I think it probably happens all the time.
